UNDP holds roundtable to present key research findings and discuss recommendations of its Country Assessment on Green Energy and SME Development to transform energy sector in Tajikistan through provision of affordable and sustainable energy products and services to rural population.
The market research covered 15 districts across all regions in Tajikistan. The results demonstrate that demand for photovoltaic systems, thermal water heaters are particularly high in off-grid areas, as well as areas with touristic potential, such as: Seven Lakes, Fan Mountain Range, Baljuvon, Shahrinav, Shirkent Darvoz, Vakhan Corridor and others. The majority of respondents purchase green energy technologies in local or regional markets. The assessment showed, however, that quality and range of solar products can be further enhanced.
Representatives of governmental institutions, including the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources, Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of Tajikistan, local financial institutions, private sector entities, including those from off-grid areas, and public organizations gathered at the roundtable to discuss the market situation, including gaps and opportunities for solar-based applications and how they can be made adequately available both for the community and tourism enterprises. The participants exchanged thoughts and ideas on creating favorable business environment for vendors through improving the legislative basis and financial opportunities.
“Ensuring energy access especially in rural parts of Tajikistan is a key priority of the UNDP. We are committed to piloting and demonstrating innovative business models to ensure that these products are affordable and are of the right quality,” Nargizakhon Usmanova, UNDP Team Leader for Energy, Environment and Biodiversity said.
UNDP/GEF Green Energy Small and Medium Enterprises Development Project and UNDP/OFID Energy Access SMEs Development Project aim to facilitate the transformation of Tajikistan’s energy sector, in particular the emergence of independent energy entrepreneurs, which can offer affordable and sustainable energy products and services to the rural population.
